 Rockets for Schools Launch Day
Date:May 5, 2007
Type:Educational
Group/Sponsors:Delaware Aerospace Education Foundation
Location:Cape Henlopen State Park, Lewes Delaware
MDRA Members:Ted Proteus, Norwood Truitt, Darren Wright
During the morning by students from all over the state of Delaware launch hundreds of "Estes" rockets. Early afternoon brings out the "I" class rockets and experimental Rockets For Schools payloads. This involves about 15 groups of students launching 4" rockets built from kits. Throughout the day numerous displays and activities are open to the public. Exhibitors include aerospace companies such as Thiokol and several special law enforcement and military groups often with interesting gear that you usually don't get to see. Other experimental projects include home built hovercraft and robotic vehicles. Delaware Tech is very active in the program by conducting a high altitude balloon launch with telemetry downlink and other student projects.

Space Day at the Maryland Science Center
Date:May 6,2006
Type:Education/Demonstration
Group/Sponsors:Lockheed Martin
Location:Maryland Science Center
MDRA Members:Bill Cann, Jim Cox, Chris Cox, Glenn Davis, Kathy Gilliand, Bob Lussier, Dave Olson, Fred Schumacher, Ross Sorci
Sponsored by Lockheed Martin, Space Day is dedicated to the extraordinary achievements, benefits, and opportunities in the exploration and use of space. The ultimate goal is to promote math, science, technology, and engineering education by nurturing young peoples' enthusiasm for the wonders of the universe and inspiring them to continue the stellar work of today's space explorers.

It was a opportunity for MDRA to promote High Power Rocketry and maybe get a few more kids (both young & old!) interested in rocketry. Verteran NASA Astronauts Ken Reightler and Tom Jones were and Lockheed Martin had hands-on cockpit and flight suit displays as well as aviation/rocketry activities. [Photo Gallery]

 CanSat Summer Camp
Date:July 2005 - ESL #87
Type:Educational
Group/Sponsors:Federation of Galaxy Explorers
Location:Westfield High School, Chantilly, VA ··· MDRA Summer launches
MDRA Members:Ivan Gaylsh
CanSat program challenges innovative students to get hands-on experience in the life-cycle (one year or less) of a space project. Each CanSat team designs and builds one or more "satellites". They travel to a launch site to supervise the preparation,

launch, telemetry download and safe recovery of their experiments and data. The "CanSat"s are built to fit in a standard 12 ounce soda can such as "Coca-Cola" or "Pepsi." and operate off of battery or solar power. They are launched as the payload in a 3" diameter, 6.5’ long rocket and have their own recovery system; usually a parachute that will allow a slow drift or not longer than 20 minutes.

The Bridge Vacation Bible School - Bridge Bash
Date:July 14, 2005
Type:Demostration
Group/Sponsors:The Bridge
Location:Mowbray Park, Kent Island, Maryland
MDRA Members:Lynn Reamy, Kathy Gilliand, Bob Utley, Dave Olson
On July 14th MDRA was on hand to help Kent Island’s newest contemporary church, The Bridge, celebrate their last day of Vacation Bible School. The event, dubbed as The First Annual Bridge Bash, was held on the grounds of Mowbray Park and was attended by over 250 children and adults.

MDRA members came armed with 24 "A" powered rockets to excite the crowd. The promise of "any child who recovers a rocket gets to keep that rocket" created a stampede of determined young faces rushing to collect their prize at the sound of each countdown.

At the end of the night there were quite a few happy excited faces and hopefully some future high powered flyers were born.

 Raising Hispanic Awareness in Engineering
Date:June 2005
Type:Demonstration
Group/Sponsors:Capitol College, PerkinElmer Foundation, High Point High School
Location:Capitol College, Laurel Maryland
MDRA Members:David Smith, Dave Weber
A five-day summer program in late June offered selected students to the program, Raising Hispanic Awareness in Engineering, the opportunity to work with professional engineers to build their own rockets while learning about the mathematics, physics and engineering foundations necessary for a successful launch.

The program, which ran from June 21-25, was open to up to 10 students from High Point High School in Beltsville. PerkinElmer donated $10,000 in 2004 to establish the program, which is in its second year. The goal is to attract the next generation of the nation's fastest growing population to study math and science and - eventually - consider an engineering career.

 Team American Rocketry Challenge (TARC)
Date:Annual Event
Type:Educational
Group/Sponsors:National Association of Rocketry (NAR) and Aerospace Industries Association (AIA).
American Association of Physics Teachers and NASA.
Location:The Plains, Virginia
MDRA Members:Doug Beard, Glenn Davis, Mitch Guess, Richard Hickok, George Secrist, Ed Romani, Darren Wright, Jeff Taylor, Rob Bazinet, Jim Szypula, Fredrick Alp

Fredrick Alp's team
launches "Egg Salad" at
ESL #82, March 2005

An aerospace design and engineering event for teams of US secondary school students. Teams can be sponsored by schools or by non-profit youth organizations such as Scouts, 4-H, or Civil Air Patrol (but not the NAR or other rocketry organizations). The goal of TARC is to motivate students to pursue aerospace as an exciting career field. The event involves designing and building a one-stage or two-stage model rocket (3.3 pounds or less, using NAR-certified model rocket motors) that carries a payload of 1 or 2 raw Grade A Large eggs for a precise flight duration of 45 seconds, and then returns the eggs to earth un-cracked. Onboard timers are allowed; radio-control is not.

 Penn State University "Flying Lion"
Date:2004-2005
Type:Research Project
Group/Sponsors:Penn State University Aerospace Engineering Department.
Location:University Park, PA, MDRA Launch Sites
MDRA Members:Brian Wadsley

The Flying Lion's maiden flight
at ESL #82, March 2005
Brian Wadsley and Dmytro Luciw have taken over a rocketry project originally designed to test electronics packages. Other than motors (provided by Brian and other MDRA members), PSU has provided them with all materials to construct a new rocket. It is their goal that it will become an ongoing test bench for many other aerospace research projects including materials testing, hybrid propellant experiments and telemetry systems such as RDAS. The "Flying Lion" had its first flights at MDRA's ESL #82 launch in Price, Maryland, March 5 & 6, 2005. Dmytro and Brian will be returning to MDRA launches throughout 2005 and are hoping for the opportunity to fly at NASA's Wallops Island flight facility.
