In May 2011 MDRA donated 25 prepaid calling cards to US service men and women stationed in Afghanistan. MDRA member (and former board member) Dr. Michael McBurnett, currently a civilian contractor working in Afghanistan, acted as courier:
Dr. McBurnett to Master Sergeant Travis Wewers, May 20, 2011:
MSG Wewers:

As an expression of appreciation for service to our nation, my friends at the Maryland Delaware Rocketry Association have provided 25 prepaid calling cards for free distribution to US personnel here at IDC and IJC.
I ask that these cards be distributed first to enlisted personnel in ascending rank--lowest ranks receive cards first, then higher ranks, and so on. If there are not 25 enlisted personnel in IDC, then please expand to IJC. If there are not 25 enlisted personnel in all of IJC who would like one, then please provide one to officers, once the enlisted members have had the opportunity to decline. Branch of service is irrelevant--please distribute them to any US service members.

Yours,

Very Respectfully,
Mike
MSG Travis Wewers to MDRA Board and Membership, May 21, 2011:
TO:
Mr. Robert Utley, President
Mr. Neil McGilvray, Vice president
Ms. Kathy Gilliand, Treasurer
Mr. Peter Abresch, Secretary
Mr. Fred Schumacher
Mr. Mike Tyson
Ms. Maggie Stanton

Dr. Michael McBurnett brought by some phone cards to give to the enlisted service members here in the unit, and I wanted to take the time to send you a personal Thank You, before the others do.
Items like this, that allow the service members here to stay in contact with loved ones, are truly treasured by them. Your gift to them will bring more smiles than I can even try to put on paper.

From the bottom of my heart, Thanks to each and every one of you for your kind donation to their morale.

Very Respectfully,
MSG Travis L. Wewers

The motto of MDRA is Freedom to Fly. These three simple words have a profound meaning, and they put MDRA in a class of its own. While we enjoy the Freedom to Fly, it doesn't come without a price. The freedoms we enjoy have been hard fought for since the inception of the United States of America. Our brave and selfless soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen defend and protect us by putting themselves in harm’s way. Many have paid the ultimate price, and many more have entered a second battle for their own lives due to causalities sustained on the battlefield.

The recovery process for these heroes is often long and challenging. We owe our military and their families a huge debt of gratitude. Fisher House provides accommodations for the families of the wounded, so they can be close to the ones they love and can assist in their recuperation process.

Please join MDRA in supporting Fisher House at Red Glares X and XI, and help show our appreciation for the sacrifices of our military and their families.

Donations can be made online here and at the field.
Any amount is appreciated, and all proceeds will be given to Fisher House
on behalf of the members of MDRA.
